Term | Description |

Absence Registration | The act of registering an employee absence for time that the employee did not work during the employee's regular working hours. For more information, go to Manage employee absence. |
AL | AL is the programming language that is used for manipulating data, such as retrieving, inserting, and modifying records in a Business Central database. AL controls the execution of the various application objects, such as pages, reports, or codeunits. |
Allowance | Sparkrock 365 provides the capability to set up employee vacation allowances with rates that increase automatically based on the employee's years of service. For example, when an employee is hired, their vacation pay rate is 4%. After the employee reaches 5 years of service, their vacation pay rate increases automatically to 6%. Alternate | An individual who acts as a substitute for another individual. For more information, go to Set up an alternate approver. |
Anniversary Date | The date on which a customer's annual subscription payment is due, within a multi-year contract. |
Annual Accrual Worksheet | A worksheet that is typically used once a year to help administer employee time off, such as sick leave, and vacation time that accrues as an employee works for an organization. For example, an organization may offer four days of paid leave per quarter. When the employee has worked for six months, they have accrued eight days of paid leave. AOP | Acronym for Annual Operating Plan. An AOP is a report that outlines the finances, budgets, KPIs, and other resources that are required to meet annual organizational goals. At Sparkrock, this terminology is interchangeable with Budget. Budget and AOP are different than a forecast because Budget and AOP never change during the year. Sparkrock continually revises the forecast to reflect the revised estimates for the rest of the year. |
API | Acronym for Application Programming Interface. An API is a way for two or more computer programs to communicate with each other. It is a type of software interface, offering a service to other pieces of software. |
Appraisal | The process of evaluating and documenting how well an employee performed their job. For more information, go to Employee appraisals. |
Approval Group | Defines a set of one or more approvers. For more information, go to Set up an approval group. |
Area Code | A code that represents an area. For example, a tax area code is used in conjunction with other fields to determine sales tax. |
ARR | Acronym for Annual Recurring Revenue. ARR is a metric that calculates the annual revenue that an organization expects to receive from customers on a recurring basis, such as through subscriptions or contracts. |
Assignment | An assignment is a role or position that an employee has within an organization. Employees can have more than one assignment at a time, for example, a part-time nurse who is also employed part-time as a custodian. In other words, an assignment can consist of one or more jobs that management assigns to an employee within a company. Also, assignments provide information about an employee, such as their annual salary rate, other compensation data, and status within the company. Attendance | The act or state of being present at an organization. Sparkrock 365 includes several attendance and leave management features. For more information, go to Attendance and leave management. |
Azure Blob Storage | Azure Blob Storage is a cloud-based storage service provided by Microsoft Azure. Azure Blob Storage is designed to store and manage substantial amounts of unstructured data. For more information, go to Set up Azure Blob Storage. |

Banked Time | Sparkrock 365 includes functionality to manage employee time off in lieu and banked time off in lieu. This functionality provides employees who are asked to work hours in addition to their standard hours the ability to use those extra hours in the future for time off, in lieu of getting paid for those extra hours. In Canada, this concept is referred to as banked time or time off in lieu, or lieu time. In the United States, this concept is referred to as compensatory time or comp. time. Benefit | Any form of perk or compensation that is provided to employees in addition to their base salaries and wages. Sparkrock 365 includes benefits management functionality. For more information, go to Set up benefits management. |
Benefit Group | A group of benefit plans that are assigned to an HR position. After the benefit groups are assigned to an HR position, all benefit plans that are associated with a benefit group can be automatically or manually assigned to the employees who are assigned the HR position. |
Benefit Group Plan | The plans that are associated with each benefit group. |
Benefit Plan | The specific types of employee benefits, for example, extended health care, dental, and vision. |
Benefit Plan Status | Describes the state of the benefit plan, such as Active or Inactive. |
Benefit Option Code | A code that represents a benefit option that is used across benefit plans. |
Benefit Rate Detail | The applicable rates for payroll code and benefit status code combinations. The rates determine how payroll employee deduction amounts are updated on payroll documents. For more information, go to Set up employee benefits wage garnishment based on benefit type. |
Budget | An estimate of income and expenditure for a set period. At Sparkrock, this terminology is interchangeable with AOP. Budget and AOP are different than a forecast because Budget and AOP never change during the year. Budgeting and Planning | Sparkrock 365 includes a Budgeting and Planning extension which provides the capability to define a budget plan that is composed of multiple budget sets. Each budget set can be set up so that budget contributors can only enter budget information for a range of general ledger accounts and dimensions. After budget information has been entered, the budget set can be sent through an approval process. The combination of all budget sets per plan are the basis for a company budget. Bug | A malfunction of Sparkrock software that arises as a result of a programming error. |
Business Central | Business Central is a business management solution for small and mid-sized organizations that automates and streamlines business processes and helps you manage your business. Highly adaptable and rich with features, Business Central enables companies to manage their business, including finance, manufacturing, sales, shipping, project management, services, and more. Business central is the platform that powers Sparkrock 365. For more information, go to Business Central documentation. |
Business Central Administration Center | The Business Central administration center is a portal where administrators can perform tasks for a Business Central tenant, such as view and work with production and sandbox environments on the tenant, set up notification recipients, manage environment access, and set up Application Insights telemetry. For more information, go to The Business Central Administration Center. |
Business Central Cloud | The cloud version of Business Central is hosted on Microsoft Azure and is licensed on a subscription model. Customers pay on a monthly or annual basis. Customers are not required to invest in major hardware, such as servers and storage. Sparkrock is responsible for installing and managing updates to the software. The total cost of ownership is lower than the on-premise version. |
Business Central Codeunits | A codeunit is a container for AL code that is used in many application objects. Typically, business logic is implemented in codeunits, and then the codeunit is called from the object that performs that specific logic. |
Business Central On-premises | The on-premises version of Business Central has a perpetual license, where you pay a one-time fee to own the software, plus an annual maintenance fee for updates and support. The on-premises version of Business Central requires customers to invest in hardware and storage to host the solution. Customers require in-house IT resources to maintain and update the software. The total cost of ownership is higher than the Business Central Cloud version due to the initial setup costs, the additional IT resources that are required, and the ongoing expenses for maintenance. |
Business Central Pages | The web pages that appear in a web browser where Sparkrock 365 data is displayed to users. |
Business Central Reports | Reports can be used to print or display information from the Sparkrock 365 database. Reports structure and summarize information, for example, a report may list all purchase invoices for a customer. Reports can also process data without printing or displaying content, for example, a report can update all prices in an item list. |
Business Central Tables | Tables are the core objects used to store data in Dynamics 365 Business Central. No matter how data is registered in the product - from a web service to a finger swipe on the phone app, the results of that transaction will be recorded in a table. |
Business Hours | The hours that Sparkrock is open to do business. |
Business Success | Customers are seeing ongoing value from their investment in Sparkrock. |

C/AL | Acronym for Client/server Application Language. C/AL is the programming language that was used within C/SIDE the Client/Server Integrated Development Environment in Microsoft Dynamics NAV, formerly known as Navision Attain, and Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central up until and including version 14. C/AL has been replaced with AL. |
CAC | Acronym for Customer Acquisition Cost. CAC is the total cost that an organization incurs in acquiring a new customer. CAC includes all the expenses that are related to marketing, advertising, sales, and any other costs that are associated with attracting and converting a prospect into a paying customer. |
Cause of Absence | An explanation why an employee did not work during the employee's regular working hours. For more information, go to Set up causes of absence. |
Cause of Inactivity | An explanation why an employee is inactive, for example, retirement, long-term illness, maternity leave. |
Compensatory Time or Comp. time | Sparkrock 365 includes functionality to manage employee time off in lieu and banked time off in lieu. Contract | A written or spoken agreement that is intended to be enforceable by law. Sparkrock 365 provides the capability for you to create a list of contracts that you have with your vendors, and then track information about the contracts and attach related documents. For more information, go to Set up contract management. |
CPI | Acronym for Consumer Price Index. The CPI is a measure of inflation that tracks the average change over time in the prices that a consumer pays for goods and services. The CPI calculates the price changes for a predefined list of goods and services over time, and then calculates the percentage change in the total cost of the predefined list of goods and services. |
CSP | Acronym for Cloud Service Provider. A CSP delivers a software platform and is responsible for maintaining and managing everything, such as hardware and maintenance, development, security, scaling, and delivery. Sparkrock uses a Microsoft CSP platform for Sparkrock solutions, such as Sparkrock 365. |
Cue | A cue provides a visual representation of aggregated business data, such as the number of open sales invoices. Cues appear on role centers. Cues are interactive, meaning that you can select a cue to drill down to data or open another page, run code, and more. This data can be raw data or calculated data. |
Customer | Customers are your source of income. For more information, go to Register new customers. |
Customer Tier | A way to classify customers. |
Cut Over | Refers to the point in time when a customer stops using their legacy solutions and starts using Sparkrock solutions. |

Deduction Entries | Records that track payroll deduction details. |
Defect | A malfunction of a Sparkrock solution that arises as a result of a programming error. |
Delegate | Term that was used in earlier versions of Sparkrock solutions to describe an alternate. |
Details Change | An HR request that tracks changes to an employee's assignment, for example, a change to the employee's rate of pay or a change to the employee's pay grade. For more information, go to Change employee details. |

Term | Description |

E2E Testing | Acronym for End to End Testing. E2E testing is a way to ensure that applications behave as expected and that the flow of data is maintained for all kinds of tasks and processes. This type of testing approach starts from the end user's perspective and simulates a real-world scenario. |
EAC | Acronym for Estimate at Completion. EAC specifies whether events, developments, or obstacles have changed the originally estimated costs of a project. EAC considers the actual cost of the project to date, as well as an estimate of remaining costs for a more dynamic picture of the project budget. To calculate the estimated effort at completion in hours, you take the cumulative actual hours delivered to date + remaining hours to complete the project. You can then compare this amount to the budgeted hours to measure project efficiency and go to whether the project has gone over, or under budget. |
EBITA | Acronym for Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, and Amortization. EBITA is helpful for the comparison of one organization to another in the same line of business. In some cases, it also can provide a more accurate view of the company's real performance over time. |
EBITDA | Acronym for Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization added back. EBITDA can be used to track and compare the underlying profitability of companies regardless of their depreciation assumptions or financing choices. |
EBR | Acronym for Executive Business Review. An EBR is a meeting involving top-tier stakeholders that Sparkrock periodically has with a customer. An EBR helps to build the relationships and is an opportunity to showcase Sparkrock's value to the customer. |
Embed App | An embed app is a end-to-end solution that meets the specific needs of a specific industry. |
Employee | An individual that is paid a wage or a salary for performing one or more duties for an organization. |
Employee Benefit | Any form of perk or compensation that is provided to an employee in addition to their base salary or wage. Sparkrock 365 includes benefits management functionality. For more information, go to Set up benefits management. |
ERP | Acronym for Enterprise Resource Planning. A type of software that helps organizations automate and manage their core business processes for optimal performance. |
ETL | Acronym for Extract, Transform, and Load. ETL is the process of combining data from multiple sources into a central repository that is called a data warehouse. ETL uses a set of business rules to clean and organize raw data, and then prepare the data for storage, data analytics, and machine learning. |
EWA | Acronym for Earned Wage Access. EWA determines the weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly pay cycles of employees so that employees know when they can access the money that they have earned. |
Executive Sponsor | The person in an organization who is responsible for financially authorizing a project and creating the project charter. |
Expense Ledger | A type of ledger that tracks expenses. For more information, go to Generate vendor payables from payroll expense ledger |
Extension | An extension customizes or adds functionality to Business Central without making any changes to the Business Central code. |

Finance and Procurement | Sparkrock 365 includes a Finance and Procurement extension that helps customers manage all components of their organizations finances, such as, general ledger, fund accounting, commitments, encumbrances, requisition management, purchasing, reporting, cash management, accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed asset management, expense claims, project and grant accounting, budget management, and inventory management. |
Forecast | Predict or estimate a future event. At Sparkrock, a forecast is different than a Budget or AOP. Unlike Budget and AOP, which never change during the year, Sparkrock continually revises the forecast to reflect the revised estimates for the rest of the year. |
FTE | Acronym for Full-time Equivalent. A unit of measure that tracks the number of full-time hours that are worked in an organization. For example, if full-time is 35 hours per week, and their are two part-time employees who work 17.5 hours per week, that equals 1.0 FTE. |

Go live | The date on which a customer begins using Sparkrock 365 in their production environment. |
Go or No Go | A decision that is made by stakeholders regarding whether to proceed or stop a course of action. For example, a customer must make a go or no go decision regarding whether to begin using Sparkrock 365 in their production environment. |
Gross Margin | The amount of money a company retains after incurring the direct costs that are associated with producing goods and providing services. |
Gross Retention | A metric that measures the total number or percentage of customers who remain with an organization over a specified period, regardless of changes in their spending or revenue. To calculate gross retention, an organization typically takes the total number of customers at the beginning of the period and subtracts the number of customers who churned or cancelled during the period. The result is expressed as a percentage of the original number of customers. |
Grounds for Termination Code | A code that represents a reason why an employee was terminated, such as dismissal, retirement, resignation, or deceased. This terminology is used in the United States. HR Company | A business entity that has a unique business number. HR companies are used to group a number of HR positions under the same regulatory business number. |

HR Departments | The various departments within an organization. For more information, go to Set up HR departments. |
HR Employee Class | A classification that can be assigned to an employee, for example, full-time or part-time. For more information, go to Set up HR employee classes. |
HR Management | Sparkrock 365 includes an HR Management extension that helps customers manage all components of their HR operations, such as employee management, absence and leave management, employee and manager self-service, position management, compensation management, training and qualifications management, benefit management, collective agreement management, and seniority management. |
HR Pay Code | A unique code that represents the type of pay an employee earns, for example, regular pay, car allowance, and paid sick days. |
HR Pay Cycle | The defined time an employee works before receiving pay for their services. |
HR Position Class | HR position classes are sometimes referred to as jobs. Position classes are a category of positions or roles within an organization that have similar attributes. For more information, go to Set up HR position classes. |
HR Reason | HR reason codes are used to indicate why an HR request was created. For more information, go to HR reason codes. |
HR Request | A request to create or update employee information, such as profiles, employee pay information, rates, benefits, and assignments. For more information, go to HR requests. |

KUT | Acronym for Key User Training. KUT is training that is provided to department leads or key staff. |

LTD | Acronym for Long Term Disability. LTD is a condition that prevents an individual from working for a long period. |
LTV | Acronym for Life Time Value of the customer. LTV is the total amount of revenue an organization expects to generate from a single customer over the course of their relationship. To calculate LTV, typically an organization estimates the average revenue a customer will generate per year, multiplies that estimate by the number of years the organization expects to retain the customer, and then subtracts the cost of acquiring and servicing that customer. |

Also, it provides access to personal information for employees and managers. mySparkrock places the power of Sparkrock 365 in the hands of your organization's users. mySparkrock User | An employee who uses mySparkrock. |
mySparkrock User Profile | mySparkrock user profiles are used to manage dimensions and user security as well as reduce the effort that is required to manage multiple users. |

NAV Module | Before Business Central, there was Dynamics NAV. Dynamics NAV had a modular design so that customers only had to buy the parts of the system that they required. |
NCE | Acronym for New Commerce Experience. NCE is where Sparkrock procures the Microsoft licenses for Sparkrock customers. The NCE per seat model for Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365, Windows 365, and Power Platform subscriptions is the latest licensing model in the evolution of Microsoft's CSP program. NCE provides Microsoft resellers, such as Sparkrock, with new tools to simplify and manage subscriptions. |
Net Retention | A metric that measures the overall revenue that an organization retains from existing customers over a specified period. To calculate net retention, typically an organization takes the revenue that the organization generated from a group of customers at the beginning of a period, adds any revenue from those customers during the period, and then subtracts any revenue that the organization lost due to churn or customer cancellations. The result is expressed as a percentage of the original revenue. |
New Implementation | A new implementation involves the creation and execution of a plan for moving a customer from their legacy software to Sparkrock software. |
NPS | Acronym for Net Promoter Score. A metric that is used to measure the loyalty of a customer to a company. |

OAuth | Acronym for Open Authorization. OAuth is an open standard authorization framework for token-based authorization on the internet. OAuth enables an end user's account information to be used by applications, such as Sparkrock 365 and mySparkrock, without exposing the user's account credentials. OAuth acts as an intermediary on behalf of the end user, providing Sparkrock solutions with an access token that authorizes specific account information to be shared between applications. |
OECTA Connector | Sparkrock 365 has an Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association (OECTA) Connector extension that provides the capability to manage and create the OECTA membership fee file export. For more information, go to Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association (OECTA) connector. |
OTE | Acronym for On Target Earnings. Typically, base pay plus variable pay equals total potential earnings. |

Pay Grid Code | Code that represents a pay grid. A pay grid is comprised of pay grades and pay steps. A pay grade is a range that includes a minimum amount and a maximum amount. For more information, go to Set up pay grids. |
Pay Step Code | Code that represents a pay step. For more information, go to Set up pay steps. |
Pay Type | Defines the type of pay, for example, per diem, hourly, and salary. |
Payment Request | A type of document that records that payment was requested for goods or services. For more information, go to Payment requests. |
PCard | Acronym for Purchasing Card. A PCard is a type of charge card that allows organizations to take advantage of the existing credit card infrastructure to make electronic payments for a variety of business expenses, for example, goods and services. PCR | Acronym for Project Change Request. A PCR is a formal process that organizations use to request changes to the agreed-upon deliverables to a project's scope, timeline, or budget. Typically, a PCR includes a description of the requested change, the rationale for the change,and the impact the change is expected to have on the project's objectives, timeline, and budget. |
Personalization | You can customize Sparkrock 365 to suit your work preferences. For more information, go to Personalize your workspace. |
Permissions | Permissions control which objects a user can access within each database or environment, in combination with the user's license. For more information, go to Assign permissions to users and groups. |
Per Pay Accrual Worksheet | A worksheet that is used for a pay period to help administer employee time off, such as sick leave, and vacation time that accrues as an employee works for an organization. |
Phone Support | Customer service support that is delivered through a phone conversation. |
Platform | Sparkrock 365 core extension that is required for all other Sparkrock 365 extensions. |
PMO | Acronym for Project Management Office. A PMO is a group of individuals who define the standards of project management for a company. The PMO retains the documentation and metrics for executing projects and is tasked with ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget. |
Position Code | A unique code that represents the job or job title of an employee, for example, accountant, teacher, and nurse. |
Power BI | A Microsoft developed analytics service that provides interactive visualizations and business intelligence capabilities with an interface that is simple enough for an organization's end users to create their own reports and dashboards. Power BI connects to a wide range of data sources and provides the capability for users to create real-time dashboards that users can access on any device. Typically, organizations use Power BI for data analysis, data visualization, and for business reporting purposes. |
Primo Payday | Primo Payday is a Business Central extension that ensures accurate, streamlined payroll process that frees up time for staff to focus on other parts of their organization. The Primo Payday extension integrates with Sparkrock 365 via the Primo Payday Connector extension. |
Primo Payday Connector | Sparkrock 365 has a Primo Payday Connector extension that integrates Sparkrock 365 with the Primo Payday extension to ensure an accurate, streamlined payroll process that frees up time for staff to focus on other parts of their organization. Priority | The degree of impact a defect has on an organization. The higher the defect's impact on the organization, the higher the priority. Defect priority determines the order in which developers fix bugs. |
Probation | A trial period where an employer can dismiss a new hire without notice and for any non-discriminatory cause. |
Product Roadmap | A shared source of truth that outlines the vision, direction, priorities, and progress of Sparkrock solutions over time. The roadmap is a plan of action that aligns Sparkrock around short and long-term goals for Sparkrock software and how the goals will be achieved. The roadmap also provides a notice to customers regarding when they can expect new features and changes so they can prepare and adjust their processes as required. |
Product Support | Customer service support that focuses on product tools and knowledge so that customers can get the most out of Sparkrock solutions. |
Production Environment | An environment where the latest versions of software are published to end users. |

Support Ticket | When a customer makes a request to the Sparkrock customer support team, for example, a request to resolve an issue with a Sparkrock solution, a support ticket is created. The support ticket tracks interactions between a customer and a service representative. Also, the support ticket tracks other actions that are taken by Sparkrock staff, for example, Sparkrock developers update support tickets while investigating or working on the tickets.
